Forum for Beginning Principals

Beginning principals are invited to join in conversations with highly successful principals from among the ranks of the state principals and principals of the year (POY). Each POY will focus on a specific hot topic or important issue for Beginning School Principals K-12. Participants will have the opportunity to rotate from table to table, selecting the topics they would like to discuss with an experienced and highly successful principal. New leaders also will have the opportunity to learn more about how the COSA can enhance their capacity as leaders.

Beginning Principals who are Coalition of Oregon School Administrators (COSA) members are encouraged to attend the Principals Conference, October 20-22, 2013. The conference registration fee is covered by Oregon Association of Secondary School Administrators (OASSA) and Oregon Elementary School Principals Association (OESPA).

iPad for Administrators and Teacher Leaders

Streamline your daily business tasks with apps that eliminate paper-based processes, give you real time information, and improve efficiency of common administrative activities. In this hands-on workshop, you will learn a variety of tips and tricks as well as explore several apps that will help you be a more effective iPad user. In addition, you will explore tools you can use for gathering teacher observation data and guide your teachers through yearlong professional development.

SB290 – The Oregon Framework for Teacher and Administrator Evaluation

Come and find out the lessons learned from others regarding implementation of the following teacher and principal evaluation systems and initiatives: TIF, CLASS, and ODE’s Collaboration Grant. Find out the pitfalls to avoid and the priorities to establish when you implement your systems in a way that will make a difference for student learning and growth.  This session will include Q&A time.

Fireside Chat

This informal session will provide opportunity for principals and teacher leaders to engage in conversation with each other and invited guests, around current hot topics that are important to principals, teacher leaders and students.

The Fireside Chat will be facilitated by Lee Loving and Rynda Gregory. Join invited guest Rob Saxton, Deputy Superintendent of Public Instruction, ODE and others in an informal setting. Engage in conversation with Rob Saxton, principals and teacher leaders around issues that Principals have told us they want to talk about.

We have heard your cries for help! We know the ‘theory’ behind the wonderful ‘opportunities’ we have been afforded to improve the education of our students this year. But how in the world do we implement it all…at the same time. The participant questions will guide the conversation. The chat may include information on SB290, HB2220, CCSS, Smarter Balance. We will also do his best to answer your questions and provide time for discussion. Please join us for this fireside chat, Sunday evening, before dinner from 4:30-5:30 pm at the Riverhouse. As educators, if we want our students to be caring, kind, loving, empathetic people, then we need to take the initiative to teach that. Students learn kindness by being kind, they learn to care by caring, and they learn empathy by being empathetic. Teachers need to create an environment where students learn to care for others not by talking but by doing, by being actively engaged. Then the message is cultivated that our lives are not separate, but in fact completely connected. When we teach kindness, compassion, love and empathy, there is no room for hate.

  Developing High-Quality School Emergency Operations Plans

In January 2013, President Obama put forward his “Now is the Time” plan to reduce gun violence.  One of the executive actions put forth in his plan was the development of three new emergency planning guides by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, led by FEMA, the Departments of Education; Justice, led by the FBI; and Health and Human Services. One of the three is the Guide for Developing High-Quality School Emergency Operations Plans.

This four-hour training session, Developing High-Quality School Emergency Operations Plans, will provide an overview of the recently released guide, designed to help schools develop and implement high-quality emergency operations plans (EOPs), and describe the principles and processes that will help ensure planning efforts are aligned with the emergency planning practices at the national, state, and local levels. Specifically, this training will provide participants with an overview of:

• The key principles for developing a comprehensive EOP for a school ;
• The planning process for developing, implementing and refining an EOP for a school;
• The form, function, and content of a school EOP; and
• Topics that support emergency operations planning including school climate, information sharing, active shooter situations, and psychological first aid for schools.
