Job Summary
Provide special education students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to student ability levels. Work in self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned.
Essential Duties
Collaborate with students, parents, and other members of staff to develop IEP for each student assigned and assume the role of Case Manager.
Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the IEP. Implement an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required.
Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula as needed and assist special education students in regular classes with assignments.
Use student data to drive instructional choices.
Plan and supervise assignments for Educational Assistant(s)
Use technology in the teaching/learning process
Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
Provide or supervise personal care, medical care, and feeding of students as stated in IEP.
Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by principal.
Be a positive role model for students; support mission of school district.
Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
Manage student behavior which includes intervening in crisis situations.
Consult district and outside resource people regarding education, social, medical, and personal needs of students.
Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Assist in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials as required.
Other Duties
1. Maintains professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings and other professional activities.
2. Participates in various student and parent activities which occur in school including student clubs and after-school activities.
3. Creates an effective learning environment through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and activity/learning centers.
4. Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrator.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities Required)
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university
Valid Oregon teaching certificate with required special education endorsements for assignments
Demonstrated competency in the subject area(s) assigned
Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
Knowledge of Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation
General knowledge of curriculum and instruction
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to operate a telephone, to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; to bend, stoop, climb stairs, and reach overhead.
