2024 Preventing Restraint and Seclusion in Oregon Schools

Webinar Overview: This interactive, scenario-based series offers participants a practical and immersive learning experience. Through realistic early childhood, elementary, and teen scenarios, participants will explore legal regulations, preventative strategies and reporting procedures. The sessions build sequentially to deepen understanding of compliance, safety, and best practices related to restraint and seclusion.  All sessions will be recorded.

  • Module 1: Legal Parameters & Requirements
    • Participants will explore federal and state laws governing restraint and seclusion, including ORS 339.285 through 339.308, and analyze research findings on their impact. Case studies will provide context for applying regulations, with a focus on how these practices align with mandatory reporting of child abuse.

  • Module 2: Preventative Strategies
    • This module focuses on trauma-informed care, de-escalation techniques, and positive behavior support strategies that reduce reliance on restraint and seclusion. Participants will learn proactive strategies that emphasize inclusion and relational learning environments.

  • Module 3: Data Collection & Reporting
    • Participants will learn the statutory requirements for documenting and reporting incidents of restraint and seclusion, with a focus on using data to improve school practices. The session highlights transparency and compliance to foster safer, more inclusive educational environments.
