Job Title:   EL Teacher

Salary Range:  Licensed Salary Schedule

Reports to:  Principal or designee

Please note that this position is 192 days with 5 paid holidays, paid sick leave and paid flexible personal leave (3 days per year).  If hired after the start of the school year, days and leave are pro-rated.  The McMinnville School District provides generous personal and family benefits including medical, dental and vision coverage.

Job Summary:

To provide special services to limited English-speaking students.

Essential Job Functions:

Identifies students with limited English speaking abilities.

Provides English instruction to eligible students.

Maintains the confidentiality of student communications and keeps records as required by law, policy and regulations.

Creates a positive, safe and stimulating learning environment and maintains control of the classroom, supervisor areas, and assemblages of students.

Plans and implements a program of study that will meet the individual academic needs by using language acquisition theory in regard to each one's cultural, behavioral, motivational, and ability differences and by expecting the highest level of achievement from each student.

Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media.

Assesses the language progress of the students on a regular basis and maintain such records as required by law and district policy.  Keeps parents informed of students' progress.

Conducts pre- and post-language assessments to determine strengths and weaknesses of selected students.

Familiarizes students with American customs and culture in order to help them adapt to life in America and ease the gap between cultures.

Prepares required reports and testing data accurately and punctually.

Cooperates with other staff members in planning goals, objectives, and materials which will complement those used in regular classrooms.

Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for educational assistant(s) and/or volunteer(s).

Prepares for classes assigned and shows evidence of preparation upon the request of the immediate supervisor.

Represents the school, district and profession in the best manner possible at all times.

Supervises student activities as required of all licensed staff.

Selects books, equipment and other instructional materials, as appropriate.

Serves as a resource to teachers and administrators regarding new methods and materials useful in teaching ELL in the content areas.

Assists teachers in dealing with specific problems concerning ELL students in their classrooms.

Fulfills performance standards identified in the evaluation process as required by the position.

Responsible for being familiar with the school/district policies and procedures which govern the work.

Prompt and regular attendance is required.

 
Other Job Functions:

Performs other tasks as assigned.

Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.

Participates in various meetings and professional development activities for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving one's skills/knowledge.

 
Essential Job Requirements - Qualifications:

Holds valid Oregon teaching license with appropriate endorsement.

Knowledge of:

Current concepts, methods and procedures for second language instruction

Laws, rules, policies, and trends regarding second language instruction

Techniques in evaluation and assessment of learning and human development

Behavior management and communication techniques

Ability to work cooperatively and harmoniously as a team member.

Ability to plan, organize, and work without close supervision.

Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with District personnel and the public.

Maintains confidential information and the privacy of District staff, students, and families.

Carries out work responsibilities effectively under pressure of deadlines, interruptions, and new or emergency situations.

Ability to work with a diverse population.

Ability to respect confidential information.

Computer skills to include use of word processing programs, database programs and the Google Suite of products. 

 
Physical Demands:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee is frequently required to walk; sit; and use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is occasionally required to stand and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and peripheral vision.                                        

Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens.  The noise level in the work environment varies but is usually moderate.

Terms of Employment: Performance of this position will be evaluated annually in accordance with Board policy on evaluation of licensed staff.
