Reports to: Receives general direction from the Training and Safety Lead. Methods of performing tasks are outlined or explained in general terms and work is reviewed by the Transportation Supervisor or Coordinator at regular intervals.

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Job Summary: The job of "School Bus Driver/Trainer" is done to improve student achievement through creating a safe environment by providing behind the wheel training and addressing school bus regulations/safety procedures; identifying training requirements for both new and experienced drivers; evaluating bus drivers' knowledge and skills; maintaining required documentation for audit in compliance with State Certification purposes and meeting district/state/federal requirements; and filling the position of Bus Driver as may be needed (e.g. during vacations, illness).

Essential Job Functions:
Assisting school building staff by providing training materials, conducting testing, and monitoring qualifications to obtain type 10 & 20 pupil transportation activity vehicle driver certification.
Developing, preparing, and presenting staff training to maintain and improve bus driver skills and success.
Instructing newly hired and prospective school bus drivers in accordance with the Oregon School Bus Drivers’ Training Program.
Presenting a continuous training program for regular school bus drivers to satisfy requirements for renewal of school bus driver’s certification behind the wheel and in the classroom.
Instructing regular school bus drivers on school bus regulations, safety procedures and positive student management practices.
Assisting drivers on routes to observe performance and assure driving routines and other practices to comply with state and department requirements.
Analyzing training program and individual needs.
Maintaining records and files and making written reports as required in English for the purpose of providing documentation for audit purposes and meeting district, state and federal requirements.
Assisting in the investigation of accidents.
Preparing and updating activity vehicle roster; maintaining vehicle training records; preparing and grading tests; preparing instructional packets.
Developing assistant training staff.
Developing and arranging student instruction regarding safe ingress and egress from buses including both emergency situations and normal transport.
Driving a school bus or other district vehicles as necessary, including all essential functions and requirements of a school bus driver.
Maintaining regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.
Performing related duties consistent with job description and assignment.
Other Job Functions:

Fuels assigned vehicle to maintain vehicle in safe operating condition.
Assists other personnel as may be required to support them in the completion of their work activities.

Qualifications:

Experience Required: Job related experience in transportation and school bus driving, preferably in a school and/or instructional setting.

Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities Required:

Skills to: operate school buses and vans in a safe manner, communicate effectively both orally and in writing, evaluate schedules and meet deadlines, plan and organize activities, administer first aid, maintain records, use English in both written and verbal form, use correct spelling, grammar and punctuation; use standard office equipment including use of basic computer applications.

Knowledge of: Principles and practices of training; provisions of the Oregon Motor Vehicle and Oregon Department of Education Laws; District policies and rules applicable to school bus operation; safe driving and general safety policies and practices; street, roads, and school locations within the District boundary; a variety of vehicles in terms of make, model, power trains including diesel, gas and propane engines; modern office procedures and computer equipment; vehicle operation, basic maintenance requirements, driving codes, and training requirements.

Ability to: sit for prolonged periods, understand and carry out oral and written instructions, work independently, make common sense decisions in potentially critical situations.

Significant Physical Abilities include: sitting for extended periods of time. Regular climbing, walking, balancing, lifting, carrying, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Frequent twisting, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, grasping, fingering, talking and hearing. climbing/balancing, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations and other sounds, near/far visual acuity/depth perception/field of vision with or without visual accommodation.

Education and Training Required: High School diploma or equivalent.

Licensing/Special Requirements: Valid Class Driver's License and evidence of insurability, School Bus Driver's Certificate, Oregon Fingerprint and Criminal Check clearance, pass pre-employment alcohol/controlled substance tests; will also be subject to random selection for mandatory alcohol/controlled substance testing, First Aid Certificate; ability to pass DOT physical examinations; possess a driving record which meets or exceeds ODE and District standards; obtain ODE Behind-the-Wheel Certification and DMV Third Party Testing Training.
