The successful candidate will serve as a member of the Superintendent’s cabinet, with an expected start date of July 1, 2023 or sooner
Salary Range is $149,237 - $165,818
Number of contract days per year = 240 days

Director of Curriculum & Instruction
Primary Function:

The Director of Curriculum and Instruction coordinates, plans, implements and evaluates the district’s curriculum, instruction and assessments and serves as a resource to instructional site administrators. The Director of Curriculum and Instruction leads the District’s initiatives in curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The Director functions as an instructional leader within the District, pursuing the goals of the District’s strategic plan and equity work; planning and facilitating staff professional development; coaching staff in areas of instruction, learning, and assessment; and leading and supporting teaching and learning initiatives. The Director directly oversees Federal Title programs as well as state funded grants and awards. The Director works with the Technology Department on the integration of instructional technology. The Director is also responsible for all district curriculum development, textbook adoption, alignment of curriculum, instruction and assessment Pre-K-12. The Director is also responsible for the selection of all curricular materials and organizing district-wide staff development. The Director oversees programs and services for English Language Learners. This position supervises licensed and classified staff within the Curriculum and Instruction Department. This position reports to the superintendent and is a member of the district’s cabinet.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serve as the instructional leader of the district.
Pursue the achievement of the District’s strategic plan and equity work.
Coordinate school and district-wide school improvement efforts that focus on equitable and improved outcomes for all students.
Coach and support staff in research-based instruction, learning, and assessment practices.
Lead major initiatives in the District related to curriculum, instruction and assessment.
Positively contribute to the overall effectiveness of the Curriculum and Instruction Department by leading and supporting Curriculum and Instruction Department initiatives.
Guide, under the supervision of the Superintendent, the ongoing development and revision of a program of instruction which is responsive to the needs of students of the District and the community, and which meets all state and federal requirements.
Directly and indirectly oversee state and federal grant programs, i.e., Title IA, IC, III, IV, IX, Targeted Schools grants, Jumpstart Kindergarten, Summer grants.
Develop and review district common curriculum, common assessments and the other fundamental elements of team-based learning communities.
Coordinate the development of planned course statements and review requests for new courses. Follows district procedures for approval and final board adoption.
Co-coordinate district professional development calendar activities.
Coordinate district assessment calendar.
Responsible for summer school coordination and programming.
Work with the technology team; help to identify, research, test, and implement innovative integrated instructional technology approaches and tools.
Establish procedures for grade and same-course teams to formally analyze annual achievement data, set measurable goals, and identify specific areas in need of improvement.
Ensure that each school sets a schedule for grade and same-course teams to meet, and establish effective team meeting protocols and procedures for documenting the team’s focus and progress (e.g., team lesson or learning logs).
Establish and maintain community partnerships that support student learning opportunities and college level credits.
Serve as the district’s AVID coordinator.
Annually review school performance data.
Develop walkthrough protocols to monitor teaching and learning.
Advocate for curriculum, instruction and technology needs.
Track and analyze data related to Curriculum and Instruction initiatives, instructional technology and associated staff and student performance.
Coordinate the curriculum improvement activities and scope of instructional activities of Forest Grove School District and evaluate individual school improvement plans.
Develop meaningful inservice training program plans to meet District-wide and building-level objectives in the area of Curriculum and Instruction.
Oversee and coordinate activities in the areas of ELD, Migrant, TAG and Assessment.
Participate in and contribute to District leadership teams such as the administrative team and the superintendent’s cabinet.
Accomplish financial objectives by forecasting requirements, preparing an annual budget, scheduling expenditures, analyzing variances and initiating corrective action.
Provide principals and teachers with counsel and assistance in the solutions of instructional problems.
Maintain professional knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, benchmarking state-of-the-art practices and participating in professional organizations.
Supervise Curriculum and Instruction Department staff members; planning, monitoring and appraising job results; coaching, counseling and disciplining employees; initiating, coordinating and enforcing systems, policies and procedures.
Compose, edit, and prepare technical and complex documents, audits, correspondence, special reports and materials of a confidential nature; and present to various bodies, including, but not limited to the school board.
Cultivate and model a respectful and customer-service focused working and learning environment.
Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent.
Complete projects in a timely fashion and maintain organization of multiple projects simultaneously.
Maintain consistent and predictable attendance to meet the requirements of the position.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and/or Experience: Master’s degree in education or similar field. A minimum of five successful years in licensed educational roles, including two years as an administrator. Demonstrated leadership in the areas of curriculum, instruction, assessment and the development of professional learning for adults.

Skills: Work well with others from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations. Proficiency in using e-mail and word processing software. Demonstrate professionalism and appropriate judgment in behavior and speech, and dress in a neat, clean, and appropriate manner for the assignment and work setting. Demonstrate regular and punctual attendance. Confer regularly with immediate supervisor.

Knowledge: Strong knowledge of curriculum and instruction and school improvement to support higher levels of student achievement. Knowledge of Federal and State laws, rules and regulations regarding state and federal guidelines in the area of Curriculum and Instruction, including ORS’s and OAR’s.

Abilities: Ability to write clear, concise and factually correct communications. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing with the media, small groups, large groups and the public in English and Spanish. Being bilingual is preferred, but not required. Ability to work individually and in partnerships with a minimum of direction. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others. Ability to demonstrate interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy. Drive between District buildings and locations as needed.

Certifications: Oregon Professional Administrator License or the ability to obtain one prior to the first day of employment. Maintain a valid Oregon driver’s license.

Working Conditions:

The work environment is a standard office setting. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to walk, sit, use hands for fine manipulation, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms using a keyboard and video display terminal. The employee is frequently required to stand and stoop, kneel, crouch and climb stairs. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 25 pounds. Frequent travel to district and non-district locations for meetings and activities that may occur during the day, evening, or on weekends. High level contact with district personnel and outside agencies.
