JOB TITLE: CONTROLLER
REPORTS TO: CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER

The Sherwood School District is currently hiring for a Controller to work as a part of a dynamic team. In this position, you will provide expertise in accounting, finance, and budgeting in a public school district of approximately 4600 students. We are seeking an individual who is excited to grow professionally and be part of a team that works with a variety of stakeholders at the District Office, in school buildings, and with members of the community.

Salary Range (District pays the 6% employee contribution to PERS)
2024-25 School Year: $98,235 - $122,885
2025-26 School Year: $103,147 - $129,029

Paid Time Off:
- Vacation: 20 days per year for 5 years; 25 days per year after 5 years
- Sick Leave: 12 days each year that carry over to the following year
- Personal Leave: 2 days, plus one Wellness Day
- 11 paid holidays

We are seeking a candidate with a mindset of personal growth and who values collaboration within the fiscal department and across the district. Candidates who fit those criteria, but do not necessarily meet all of the requirements listed below should apply if this position is of interest.

Position to start on a mutually agreed upon date, ideally ranging from sometime in mid-winter to early spring.

JOB SUMMARY:
Manage and implement all accounting, finance and state reporting functions, lead the annual audit process, assist with the annual budget process, provide payroll and benefits management services to the Fiscal Services Division, the Administration and to the staff, and manage the District’s use of finance and accounting-related technology.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Reports to the Chief Financial Officer. Exercises no supervision at this time. Provides guidance or training to fiscal support staff.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The Sherwood School District is seeking a candidate who is excited to grow professionally and contribute positively to the culture of our team. The qualifications listed below are preferred and candidates are encouraged to apply even if they don’t meet every preferred qualification.
- CPA, Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, or equivalent experience;
- 5-7 years of progressive experience in financial management, preferably within a public sector or educational institution
- Proven experience in budgeting, financial reporting, and managing financial operations
- Strong knowledge of governmental accounting standards and regulations.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- Proficient in financial software and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
- Strong leadership skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Build and maintain strong relationships and bring positivity and enthusiasm to the fiscal team and the district as a whole
- Implement the district’s accounting operations, including GL accounting, cash flow management, and maintenance of fixed assets
- Manage and provide oversight to district financial operations including payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and grants
- Mentor and provide professional development for fiscal staff, and foster a collaborative and supportive work environment
- Coordinate and manage external audits, including the preparation of necessary documentation
- Prepare various reports as required by the local, state, and federal government agencies
- Work closely with the CFO to prepare the district’s budget, monitor and analyze budget performance, and provide accurate financial projections
- Document, monitor and revise internal controls to prevent and detect fraud
- Stay informed about changes in regulations and make recommendations to ensure compliance
- Other duties may be assigned

EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated bi-annually.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

- Climb stairs
- Use hands for repetitive motions, including single grasping, fine manipulation, and pushing/pulling a maximum of 40 pounds
- Drive between District facilities for meetings

WORKING CONDITIONS:
The employee works with groups of staff and students, and on a one-on-one basis. The working conditions are that of a typical office atmosphere and/or school building.

Occasional travel between District buildings is required; occasional travel to area districts or ESDs for meetings and conferences should be anticipated.
