Hours will vary based on the tutor's schedule and will be discussed during interviews

Tutors are the key to the success of the AVID program. We are recruiting local community members and students from local area colleges and universities who want to make a difference in the lives of St. Helens Middle and High School Students.

AVID tutors build relationships with students and build on this relationship to provide a source of support for students academic and social success.

AVID tutors are trained to use specific teaching methodologies and materials to work with AVID students. Tutors work with AVID students in study groups and individually, assisting them in all academic areas to make progress commensurate with college expectations.

No teaching experience or subject expertise is required! You will be given the skills to facilitate student learning.

Essential Functions:

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

Acts as a model of personal excellence and high expectation for the purpose of setting an example for AVID students to follow.
Communicates frequently and honestly with the AVID coordinator/teacher for the purpose of providing information regarding progress and areas of concern.
Conducts mini-lessons in the process of writing in all subject areas, study skills and other aspects for the purpose of college preparation.
Conducts tutorial sessions in all areas of mathematics for the purpose of assisting students in achieving the goals of their mathematical assignments.
Evaluates student binders (e.g. calendars, class and textbook notes, etc.) for the purpose of determining scheduled tasks and assignments.
Examines student notes and discussions for the purpose of determining the concepts that need to be taught or retaught.
Familiarizes herself/him with materials in the AVID Curriculum Libraries for the purpose of understanding the materials that are being taught to the student.
Works with students in any phase of the writing process (e.g. brainstorming, clustering, revision and editing) for the purpose of exploring problem-solving and literary techniques.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

High School Diploma with concurrent enrollment in a college and/or a community college and/or vocational school degree with study in job related area.
Attend eight hours of initial AVID Tutor Training and eight hours of follow up training.
WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work is performed primarily indoors and some outdoor instruction and supervision may be required.
Frequent or prolonged standing, walking, sitting, talking, hearing conversations will be required
Requires accurate perceiving of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, handling and working with materials and objects.
Incumbent must be able to bend, kneel, squat, climb stairs or ladders, use hands for repetitive motions, push, pull, lift up to 25lbs and more with assistance.
Possible exposure to bodily fluids due to student or employee injury or illness
The position may require working with a variety of individuals including those with intellectual or developmental disabilities, mental health conditions, and/or other differences.
Working with distraught or difficult individuals may occur.

Follow all District policies, work procedures, and reasonable requests by proper authority.
Maintain the integrity of confidential information relating to a student, family, colleague, or District patron.
WORK YEAR AND BENEFITS: This position follows the school-year calendar (September-June). No benefits provided.

EVALUATION: Evaluation conducted by AVID Elective Teacher/Coordinator utilizing AVID Tutor Rubric.
