The Churchill County School District Board of Trustees is seeking an educational leader with an outstanding record of achievement to serve as Superintendent beginning July 1, 2023. The School Board anticipates offering an annual base salary in the range of $160,000 to $175,000 plus benefits for the position. As a part of the benefit package, the District contributes 33.75 % of wages into Nevada PERS for the employee, with no Social Security deduction on wages. Also, the State of Nevada has no income tax.

The District

The Churchill County School District (CCSD) serves a richly diverse student population of about 3,400 students in three elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, and an early learning center (pre-K). The District employs a staff of about 400 employees with an annual budget for year ending June 30, 2022 of approximately $52M. The District has invested more than $40 million in capital improvements for facilities and technology infrastructure since 2009. The District’s Mission is “Everyone Always Learning.” District-wide the average student-teacher ratio is about 22:1 with smaller ratios in the elementary grades.

Technology is an important part of instruction for teachers and students in CCSD. Chromebook devices have been successfully rolled out on a 1:1 ratio for all students in all grade levels to provide authentic and relevant 21st Century learning. Each classroom is fitted with smartboard technology and the ability to perform state-of-the-art lessons. Teachers enhance their technology skills through a robust program of professional learning opportunities and trainings. CCSD is a state-wide leader in personalized competency-based learning for students.

Churchill County High School has a rich tradition of excellence. The High School offers eleven different Advanced Placement courses and participates in the JumpStart to College program with Western Nevada College. With an emphasis on Career Technical Education (CTE), the District offers 18 programs outside the basic academic curriculum aimed at building the knowledge and skills students will use in everyday life after graduation. Both boys and girls basketball teams have multiple state championships and other sports, such as, football, cheerleading and archery have also won state titles. The school receives great community support for athletics, fine arts, and other programs through relationships with local government, higher education, and business.

The Position

The Board requires the superintendent be a strong educational leader who has the following professional experience and training:

• Either holds or is eligible for a Nevada school administrative license with authorization to serve as superintendent;
• A master’s degree in the field of education or equivalent
• Successful teaching experience at the elementary or secondary school level;
• Must become a resident of Churchill County within 6 months after accepting the position

In lieu of the experience and training requirements above, the Board may consider as a candidate for its superintendent’s position an individual who qualifies to be a Nevada school superintendent.

• Empowers leadership in others through appropriate delegation of responsibility
• Is devoted to serving all students and families from all backgrounds and values their input
• Demonstrates a solid record of successful hiring practices and management experience
• Builds partnerships with community, military, local government and higher education
• Has excellent listening skills and invites input/feedback from others about new ideas
• Serves as a state-wide advocate for Churchill County schools
• Understands the respective roles of Board and Superintendent and serves as advisor to the Board
• Is willing to make tough decisions when necessary and follow through
• Builds a positive climate which provides multi-tiered systems of support for those who are struggling

The Community

Located in the high-desert environment of the Great Basin in north-central Nevada, Churchill County is a rural community of approximately 25,000 residents. The school district office is located in Fallon, a town of about 9,300. Churchill County is located an hour’s drive to either the hub of Nevada’s political and governmental sites in Carson City, or to the recreational opportunities in the Reno-Lake Tahoe area. Fallon offers a small-town atmosphere, diverse recreation, well-preserved history and an environment that values the land. The County is also the home to Fallon Naval Air Station, the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center, and the Navy Fighter Weapons School (Top Gun). East of Fallon is the vast open expanse of the “True West” offering excellent outdoor recreational access for fishing, hunting, camping, wildlife viewing, and off-road activities. With wetlands swarming with birds and mountains teeming with wildlife, an outdoor enthusiast can find plenty to do here.

Note: The successful candidate must become a resident of Churchill County within 6 months after employment.
