STUDENT SERVICES SPECIALIST
Purpose:
The Student Support Specialist (SSS) enhances the school climate by providing support for students who have barriers that make growth and achievement difficult. The SSS works with individual or groups of students providing instruction, guidance and social skill development. The incumbent will frequently coordinate between teachers, specialists, and families to implement supports that focus on the needs, assets and potential of every student in fostering a safe and supportive school environment.
Reports to: Principal
Nature of Work: The SSS performs work of a regular and recurring nature under general supervision. The nature of the work requires strict adherence to policies, procedures, regulations, and laws. The incumbent interfaces daily with students, parents, school administrative staff and school employees. Because this job involves frequent interaction with students, the position requires a high level of professional decorum, excellent judgment, a calm and appropriate demeanor, and the capacity to serve as a role model to young people.
Supervision Exercised: No direct supervision exercised over District employees. May provide oversight and guidance in the management of classified staff.
Interface: Primarily interfaces with students, school staff, parents, and district administrators.
Essential Job Functions:

Assists in establishing a safe and supportive school environment conducive to teaching and learning.
Providing leadership and support in the identification of complicating factors impeding student progress.
Knowledge and understanding of, or willingness to delelop skills in, the requirements and standard protocols associated with various student issues. (examples: requirements of mandatory child or sex abuse reporting, title IX issues, development of student support or safety plans, rights and accomodations for students on 504’s or homeless students…….)
Address student needs by coordinating with in-district and out-of-district resources.
Coordinate the matching of the strengths and interests of individual students with existing programs or activities.
Foster the development of new school programs or activities designed to capitalize on student interests and increase engagement.(examples might include coordinating a mentoring program, utilizing community resources, or finding a private sector partner for a club or activity)
Provide leadership and serve as a resource to school staff on behavioral issues, including assistance with the development of student behavior plans or working with individual students to develop effective de-escalation and regualation strategies.
Collaborate with families to improve student attendance, including communicating with teachers and conducting appropriate attendance interventions.
Provides students with mentorship, guidance and counseling.
Serve as a positive role model for patience, empathy and respect.
Maintaining necessary communication with parents, advising on modifications to individual instructional programs, assisting with development of long-term goals, issuing proactive disciplinary interventions and assisting with crisis intervention.
Participate in ongoing professional development and training as prescribed by administration.
Maintains a variety of confidential student records.
Maintains effective and respectful working relationships with staff and students.

Working Conditions:
The SSS works primarily in a school building. Although the primary work is indoors, the SSS may on occasion work outdoors supervising students in variable weather conditions, including inclement weather. The incumbent must be able to stand and/or walk for long periods of time. The incumbent will need to walk quickly at times, as well as speak and hear in often loud environments. The work environment may include exposure to unpleasant interior temperatures, dirt, and communicable diseases.
The position involves high level of interaction with students and families from multiple and diverse backgrounds, many with unique needs. The incumbent must maintain composure under stress, and must manage him or herself in the presence of emotionally challenging interactions with staff, students, and parents.
