Southern Oregon ESD is seeking a dedicated and skilled Braillist/Compensatory Assistant for a position that combines production of specialized educational materials (e.g. Braille and Large Print)
along with direct support to students with visual impairments who attend school in their local communities. The Braillist/Compensatory Assistant works with the Itinerant Teacher of the Visually Impaired.
This unique position combines office-based production with hands-on instructional support in classrooms. The Braillist/Compensatory Assistant can progress along a career ladder moving from Level 1
Assistant up to Level 3 Assistant as professional skills are acquired. The Level 1 Braillist/Compensatory Assistant position seeks individuals interested in pursuing a rigorous training plan geared toward
the independent production of specialized educational materials.

POSITION GOAL: Assist the licensed teacher of the Visually Impaired with students who are eligible for regional services, in order to compensate for the student’s loss of vision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the impact of
vision loss across developmental stages, adaptive teaching strategies and an overview of needed compensatory skills for student.
2. Assist licensed teacher of the visually impaired in carrying out instructional competencies unique to vision loss.
3. Implement Orientation and Mobility activities as prescribed by the O&M specialist.
*4. Enlarge materials for low-vision students.
*5. Type at a speed of 40 wpm with 95% accuracy.
*6. Record materials for students.
*7. Produce basic contracted braille.
*8. Complete, to satisfaction of braille instructor, lessons 1-19 of Instruction Manual for Braille Transcribers.
*9. Demonstrate beginning computer skills: word
processing, attaching files, e-mailing, accessing the
internet, faxing.
10. Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM PREREQUISITES:
1. High school graduate or GED equivalent.
2. Willingness to learn special competencies.
3. Willingness to learn Braille codes.
4. Personable team member.
5. Possess an Oregon driver’s license and car access.

LENGTH OF POSITION: 190 Day School Year / 1.0 FTE
SALARY RANGE: Per Classified Collective Bargaining Agreement $14.90 - $17.83 hourly wage
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Teacher of the Visually Impaired, Department Chair (if requested) and appropriate involvement of the Regional Programs Coordinator
