CCSS Fall Regional Training
Common Core in Action
This year the regional series will focus on Elementary Math (K-2, 3-5) and ELA (K-2, 3-5) on the first day and Secondary Math (6-12) and ELA (6-12) on the second day. Participants on Day 1 in the elementary sessions will attend a half-day training in Math and a half-day training in ELA CCSS in their grade level band (K-2 or 3-5-6). On Day 2, secondary teachers will spend a full-day in their subject areas (6-12).

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics in Action
Featuring: Math Consultants Shannon McCaw and Sarah Schuhl
In each interactive and engaging mathematics session, participants will:
- Learn strategies and action steps for implementing a math lesson in the classroom using the Content Standards and the Standards for Mathematical Practice.
- Create lesson plans designed to meet the rigor of the Common Core with the Mathematical Practices embedded.
- Analyze and modify math assessments for use in professional learning communities and data-driven decision making.

Day 1-Elementary ELA:
Inquiring Minds Want to Know: Building Student Engagement and Proficiency through Student-Led Research
These two highly interactive and practical sessions, one with a K-2 focus, and the other tailored to the 3-5 classroom, will bring ELA CCSS-driven instruction to life. Innovative strategies and instructional approaches which integrate reading, writing, speaking, and listening standards will be shared.
The sessions will equip leaders to support students as they apply and synthesize advancing literacy skills through:
- Inquiry-Driven, Content Based Units of Study
- Development and Presentation of Project-Based Learning Outcomes
- Writing to Sources
Day 2-Secondary ELA:
Common Core in the English Language Arts Classroom
In this engaging session, English teachers will:
- Learn Instructional Strategies for fiction and non-fiction
- Bring Classroom Reading Material and Create CCSS-Aligned Lesson Unit Plan
- Create and Analyze Formative Assessments
- Understand the Elements of the Smarter Balanced Assessments and discuss how to integrate key skills into classroom instruction and assessment
Administrator Sessions
Day 1 PM Session:
Educator Effectiveness (290) and CCSS Implementation for Administrators and Teacher Leaders
Featuring:

Sarah Phillips, Education Program Specialist, Oregon Department of Education
Nicole Dalton, Education Program Specialist, Oregon Department of Education
Educator Effectiveness and CCSS Implementation: In this session, participants will gain greater understanding or the grade level and professional expectations related to CCSS Implementation and the evaluation system. We will discuss expectations, examine current understandings, and discuss supports that are available to Oregon schools and school districts from ODE.
Day 2 Full-Day Session:
Administrator’s Role with CCSS
Featuring: John Slagle, National CCSS Consultant
John Slagle will present key strategies and techniques for administrator implementation of CCSS including formative and summative assessment.
