Understanding the Intersections of ACE/Trauma, Equity, SEL, and Well-being

Creating welcoming and safe learning spaces is foundational for schools and critical for the success of each student.  It takes intentional action, and each educator has a role.  

Oregon data shows students who are of color, have diverse language backgrounds, have a disability, experience poverty, or are a member of the LGBTQ+ community experience belonging and inclusion disproportionately lower than their peers, and oftentimes also have lower graduation rates.  This session will center on the foundational principles of culturally responsive trauma-informed practices and students' social-emotional well-being and will explore the equity-focused approaches to support all of our students. Additionally, participants will also learn how to examine school policies and practices to ensure equitable student access and outcomes.

Bill Stewart, SEL4OR - Bill Stewart is a regionally recognized ACE/Trauma-Informed Schools consultant who works with school districts and ESDs across the state and region. His expertise in education spans more than 34 years first as a classroom teacher, then district administrator. He is the Coordinator for the ACE Learning Collaborative, Coordinator ESD Chronic Absenteeism Collaborative, a member SEL4OR/US leadership team, advises multiple university Teacher Prep Advisory groups, and is a member of the Executive committee for the Oregon Association of Central Office Administrators.

Shelly Reggiani, Ed.D., COSA - Shelly L. Reggiani, Ed. D., has been an educational leader for over 27  years, dedicated to the success of each student and the growth and development of her staff.  She has served as a middle school teacher, building principal, and central office administrator with a focus on Title 1 and Title 3 programs, Bilingual Education, community engagement, Counseling and Social Services, inclusion and equity, and professional communications.  She has been an adjunct professor for over a decade supporting administrative licensure, and ESOL certification. She presently is the Senior Director of Learning, Equity, and Communications for COSA, the Coalition of Oregon School Administrators, helping lift equity-focused professional development and support across the state.
